Sunny's Story
By: Patti D.

(As a small rescue organization, and as much as we wish we could, we can't always
take in every animal in need. We can, however, use every resource we have to try to
find help for some of those that have taken hold of our hearts. Please read Sunny's
story below..maybe you can be the one to bring some sunshine to this sweet boy life)

Sad Eyes. Earlier this fall, I saw Sunny for the first time. He showed up in my front yard
as a happy, playful puppy. I remember thinking how cute his ears were.. He looked so
happy and well fed, I hoped (prayed) he was simply someone's puppy that had gotten
out of his yard, at the same time fearing the worst, that he had been dumped.

Until last Wednesday, when he showed up at my house again. Now malnourished,
head down, tail between his legs, three wounds of some kind healing on his back,
eyes filled with sadness. The puppy that once wanted to play with me was gone. His
spirit was broken and he now feared me. He quickly and cautiously ate the food I
offered to him and then ran, quickly disappearing into the neighborhood jungle.

Clearly, he had experienced the darkness that this world sometimes offers to a
homeless puppy.  Like many people, we keep a prayer list for people needing prayers,
unlike many, we also keep an animal prayer list. So, after Sunny ran last Wednesday,
we added him to it. After praying for the dog living in the ditch, Magenta's missing
brother, Larry, the Marbach H.E.B. cat, the mama cat and babies at the Valero station,
and a few others, we added this special request to God for Sunny: that God would
guide him to someone who would help him.

On Saturday afternoon, he returned to my house. This time, he didn't run away after I
fed him. It hit me like a thunderbolt that God had answered our prayers, WE were the
ones to help him, at least for now. It took a can of dog food, an open gate, lots of
teamwork between Anthony and I and an hour or so, but we finally got him into our
back yard. He quickly ate the food I gave to him and nervously ran around the yard.
He needed to hide. That's how he learned to survive. My wonderful father fixed up a
make-shift dog house for him with warm bedding inside. But Sunny wasn't used to
such luxuries. He found a spot in an out of the way corner of the yard behind some
potted plants and there, he curled up. His tummy full, he fell into a deep sleep. The
kind of sleep that comes when one is exhausted with life. He slept for hours.

Freed from the burden of looking for food, water and shelter, Sunny is learning the art
of simply being. With his newly found free time, he is discovering a few of the finer
things in life such as afternoon naps, chewing a piece of rawhide, and doggie snacks!

Because we have so many pets already, we can't keep Sunny. I wish that I could be
the one to be with him the first time he wags his tail again. I long to scoop him up in my
arms and get a puppy kiss right on the nose! I would love to be there to help him come
back. Since it can't be me, we hope to find someone VERY SPECIAL with LOTS of
love and patience to accompany Sunny on his journey back to health and happiness.

It's always such a privilege to help these animals that are hurt by life to learn to love
again. But it takes time. Sunny also needs a warm place to come in out of the cold.
Our backyard is far better than the streets, but all of our warm places are already
claimed by the pets we already have. What else does Sunny need? Sunny needs a
secure yard. He does not seem to be a digger, nor do I see any sign of him being a
fence climber, though we have a wooden privacy fence. Because Sunny is afraid of
everyone at this point, I can't say he is wonderful with children, he loved my boys that
first day, but he has been in a world of pain since then. I will say he pays no attention
to the cats that have traversed my yard while he's been here. If you know of anyone
special enough to help Sunny, please let me know. Because what Sunny needs most
of all is a story that ends with the following: "Sunny's life has become, well, full of
sunshine! Bathed everyday in the warm love of his new owner, Sunny flourished and
became the dog he was meant to be. Sunny grew to love his new owner very much
and THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.. The end.

Please help Sunny find his happy ending
